3: What It Means To Be Safe, with Special Guest Ron Lue-Sang

Links and Show Notes

Ron identifies an unexpected location as relevant to being Black in America, which leads to a discussion of persecution, feeling “singled out” in a group, Islamophobia, the dehumanization of Black people, and the fear of the “other”. We explore ways to reduce this fear, and the potential consequences. Jason talks about growing up feeling identified by class instead of race, while still having names for all the mixed-race folks. We touch briefly on Calypso music as a political statement, and being raised as “upper class” when you’re not, before a short excursion to Jason’s favorite beach (which he can’t spell). We look at class in the workplace and the role of class vs. skin tone in achieving success. Ron then asks a difficult question about visiting Trinidad, prompting Jason to speculate on the impact of money on culture.
